Them There presents River Holds Peace, Some Live, the newest album from Kiran Leonard. A live record of sorts, the album documents Kiran’s work between Summer 2020 and late 2022 with the Trespass on Foot Group, a chamber quintet of three electric guitars (two high-strung), cittern, double bass, and two voices, featuring members of caroline, Shovel Dance Collective and Dear Laika.
On the one hand, River Holds Peace acts as an accompanying piece to 2021’s Trespass on Foot, an expansive, two-hour opus and a significant departure from the records preceding it — a broad and engrossing collection of feedback-laden guitar drone, austere songs for piano and strings, musique concrete, and minimal folk. The renditions documented on River Holds Peace were the “live solutions” for the grand textures of its parent album, and the two share many common features: the record-defining eschewal of a drum kit, for example. But where Trespass on Foot is diverse, sprawling and insular, River Holds Peace is lean and precise; whereas the absence of percussion on the longer record was a rejection of rhythm, here it leads to some of the most unexpectedly rhythmic music of Leonard’s career, lending space to the careful melodic interplay and measured dissonances in these fully-scored arrangements.
River Holds Peace, Some Live is the afterword of a large, significant piece of work for Kiran Leonard, which again exemplifies his open-minded, sometimes radical and always forward-thinking approach. Strengthened by additional mixing and mastering by Maelin Brown, these six tracks at times bristle with a dazzling intricacy, but are always anchored by a self-assured songcraft and lyrical flair.
