about

Them There Records presents the latest offering from the London-based artist j. b. glazer. ‘Compact Break’ takes the grungy bedroom R&B experiments of glazer's previous self-released titles to a new level of focus, creating a highly personal approach to outsider pop that settles somewhere way out there on its own. Glazer's production talents have been stirring in the South London left-field beat scenes for a lil while. Following a recent single for Coby & Mica's Curl Recordings meanwhile harbouring formative jams with friends like Klein and Ben Vince on his hard drive from many moons ago. Fair to say we’ve waited long enough for a fully realised album from j. b. glazer.

glazer opens up about writing the album:

”Sometimes everything is nice, sometimes everything is terrible, and sometimes you just want to smash your head into a wall. That’s the basis of Compact Break.”

Across the 15 tracks it’s clear that these impulses have soaked into the songs. Channelling raw energies, glazer tests out boldly forward-minded production styles - recalling grime and industrial to neo-classical leanings. All articulated through meticulously layered collages comprising of glazer’s distinct misuse of samples and surreal sense of tonality. Throughout ‘Compact Break’ we’re constantly lead down new avenues of musical expression. Fierce percussive hits rasp against the smudged R&B vocal licks of guest Bianca Scout. Twanging, un-amped electric guitar lines rest atop unsteady synths and down-tuned samples. Moments of harmony manifest as serene Muzak miniatures webbed throughout the album, contrasting the dense and progressive ambient abstractions and forming welcome plunge pools to reassess and restore composure amidst the wild experimentation.
